Private Lessons:
Dave Brady - drums, percussion, vibraphone
bravedady@hotmail.com Drummer, vibraphonist, writer, arranger, pianist, composer, and teacher David Brady is an accomplished musican with more than 30 years of professional performance and teaching experience. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Dave studied with Bill Douglass on drums and Bobby Hutcherson on vibes. He is a published author of 3 instructional drum books. Along with his fulfilling work and performance with some great players, he has maintained a fervent propensity for teaching and writing. Dave regularly performs with his own group called "GOOD VIBES" usually on vibes but occasionally on drums. He is very passionate about music. To quote the great musician Duke Ellington "MUSIC IS MY MISTRESS."
David is also promoting his *UPDATED & REVISED* "BAG OF TRICKS" Soloing Concepts For The Drum Set. Critic with MODERN DRUMMER, Richard Watson writes " This new book and CD set offers a conceptual foundation for drumset improvisation, as well as some ready-to-use weapons for your hot licks arsenal. Several musical styles are represented, including jazz and Latin, but rock feels and sensibility predominate. The CD provides clear (if not always spotlessly clean) demonstrations of the licks and solos....Since musicality is a very subjective notion, some of the BAG OF TRICKS solos may appeal to some players more than others, but each has a character distinct from the other 19. The result is a rich variety of ideas to mix and match, modify and inspire - in total a valuable tool for drummers at all levels of soloing experience." "BAG OF TRICKS" BK & CD - $20
Dave's other 2 books are STEP AHEAD PART 1, Rhythmic Studies For The Snare Drum and Part 2, Rhythnic Sudies For The Drum Set. Robin Tolleson, writer for MODERN DRUMMER writes "Drum students and teahers will enjoy these two study books. Young drummers will benefit from the logic and pacing of the beginning exercises...By exercise 9 of Part One we're playing in 5/4 and well on the way to the detailed study of notes that the author prescribes as simple, tied, dotted, subdivided in rolls, and combined into triplets. Brady has a good ear for creating catchy cadences, and includes some fun duets as well. A group of exercises at the back of the first book stresses dynamics and incorporate many of the earlier ideas into musical performances. Part Two focuses on applications of the rhythms onto the drumset. Brady begins with 8th-note rock beats, but is soon offering exercises involving 16th-note triplets, fills using the hi-hat foot, advanced rolls with kick drum and right hand, and Afro-Cuban 6/8 grooves. STEPS AHEAD PART 1 - $15, STEPS AHEAD PART 2 - $15 *BOTH* PART 1 & PART 2 - $25
Please enjoy reading and listening to the examples from "BAG OF TRICKS" - Exercise 5, one of the 5 Licks, and Solo 18 at DAVIDBRADYMUSIC@MYSPACE. You may also enjoy hearing 2 of David's original tunes exemplifying his arranging, composition, and playing skills. ENJOY!
John Trentacosta - drums
www.straightupjazz.com straightupsf@earthlink.net
505-989-4784
Native New Yorker, drummer and Straight Up leader John Trentacosta brought his collective big band and small group experience to New Mexico in 1992. After two decades as the rhythm force behind jazz notables Chuck Wayne, Jimmy Knepper, and the Al Porcino big band, John brought new energy to the New Mexico jazz scene.
He received his formal music education at New York University, and was an Assistant Arts Director for The Staten Island Chamber Music Players, from 1978 – 1992.
In 1993, he formed the jazz group Straight Up, and has since become the energy behind the group’s busy concert schedule and the two CD releases “Live Jazz in The Desert” and “No Need For Words.” In 2003, John won a “MIC” award for best producer of the CD no need for Words. He has been part of the rhythm team for concerts with saxophone legend James Moody, vocalist Teri Thornton, tenor sax sensation Doug Lawrence and 1996 Thelonious Monk saxophone competition Jon Gordon. Most recently he has performed with Eddie Daniels and The Santa Fe Symphony, Frank Morgan, Joshua Breakstone, Roger Kellaway, Nick Brignola, Lee Konitz, Bud Shank, Bobby Shew and Kenny Davern. In 2003, John began a long tenure as musical director of John Trentacosta and Friends, a trio plus special guests bi-monthly, which played almost weekly for six years at Bumble Bee’s Baja Grill in Santa Fe.
Mark (Chief) Sanchez - trumpet, fluegelhorn
www.myspace.com/chiefsanchez 505-603-5608
Mark Alan Sanchez, AKA Chief, was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, June 11th 1961. Chief is the second child of four. All the kids are super talented mostly due to thier charismatic musician parents. Ernesto (Ernie) Sanchez & Linda Dixon who were and continue to be solid inspirational educators, practitioners and supporters of flocks of musicians. Chief played in La Familia, the family band into his early teens. In 1973, local guitar virtuoso Antonio Mendoza added all four kids to his act. The La Fonda was a great place for us kids to get to still play with mom, but to also have the privilege of the professionalism of a master like Antonio. The next few years were performing with adults Jesse Sawyer, Murray Cohen, Frank Chiwiwi, Corey Hayden & many others. David Sanchez, the older brother and Chief found that there were a whole lot of young musicians in the Santa Fe area that were also aspiring achievment in the music scene. Just to mention a few because there were so many. Mark Clark, Jon Gagan, & Jeff Nelson, were great inspiration. In college Chief & Dave joined Black Jack Davey & His Friendly Band Of Pirates. While passing through Denver with David Buckland, the brothers Sanchez met up with their other college contemporaries, Cascabel. After Three or Four years the entire Cascabel family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. Chief left the group a few years in, & for a year played with Sidro's Armada. Freelancing seemed the only way to get a name as an A-List player, so Chief joined the pit orchestra at the Four Queens. That was an afternoon show so that left the nights in Vegas available for the elbow rubbing neccesary to achieve 1st call status for incoming acts such as Martha Reeves & The Vandelas, Frankie Avalon, Rich Little etc. The lounges however were where the fun was. In 1995 the Emeralds, A creation of The Las Vegas Hilton was formed as a throwback to the good old lounge performers. Chief played with dozens of other great lounge acts including Jump Jive & Wail & the legendary Earl Turner who eventually had his own showroom built for him in The New Orleans Harrah's property. The world of professional impersonators eventually became a great way to make a living. The top talent were always used as sidemen. The most fun, was working with the Bluzmen, Eric Martin & Carmen Romano.....Now back where it all started.
David Parlato
parlato45@yahoo.com 505.989.7315.
Loves teaching people how to play jazz, how to improvise solos, on any instrument, in a hands-on group setting. Think of the program as a "jam session" with him there to moderate/assist what happens in real time. More like on-the-job training, with instruments at the ready, than a lecture.
PLEASE NOTE: OLD REQUIREMENTS: You will need to bring instruments, amps, and ample outlet strips and extension chords, as needed.
NEW REQUIREMENTS: You will need to bring a music stand and a folding chair, if at all possible.
Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns you might have.
Looking forward to playing more jazz music with you all.
An important book and website:
Effortless Mastery, by Kenny Werner . Effortless Mastery is a remarkable book that deals directly with hindrances to creativity, and presents ways to let your natural creative powers flow freely with minimal stress and effort. Includes an inspiring CD of meditations designed to initiate positive thought.
Playing music should be as simple and natural as drawing a breath, yet most musicians are hindered by self-consciousness, apprehension, self-doubt, and stress. Before you can truly express your inner self, you must first learn to be at peace and overcome the distractions that can make performance difficult.
Effortless Mastery has become a favorite of many musicians who credit it with changing their lives! Easy, effortless reading paperback.
Also, go to kennywernerlive.com for a lot more interesting stuff.
